Social networks are no longer just tools you can use to interact with family and friends. They are fast becoming a great device to connect with companies and they act as platforms that you can use to represent yourself to employers. Websites such as LinkedIn allow you to summarise your past experience, interests and post examples of work, however, for an employer to get an accurate sense of your abilities, an online portfolio could be more valuable.

Did you know you can use platforms such as Pinterest, Facebook, YouTube and Tumblr to promote your work? A well-presented selection of work will build your network and may lead to job opportunities, so it’s essential you create a portfolio that shows off all your best attributes. Individuals spend more time on more socially-minded platforms, and each one works for different skill sets, so we should utilise this opportunity. Tumblr: The all-round portfolio

Tumblr is great and a simple way for literature students to show off work they are currently working on or have worked on in the past. You can quickly and easily add content to your Tumblr in a few easy steps so it’s simple to manage. If you are working on writing your own book or have wrote an opinion piece, you could upload it and tag the post in the box provided so that those interest in the topic can find it easily and give comment, opinion or advice. This is also an easy way for employers to come across your work by searching for a tag on Tumblr.

Pinterest: great for artists & designers

When most think of Pinterest, they think of pictures of food, fashion, ‘thinspo’ and handmade crafts. But what some seem fail to recognise is it can be used as a portfolio to share and market writing, art, design and photography samples. Not only can people view your work, they can share it on their own walls, therefore your work has better chance of going viral. Pinterest is a very eye-catching way to promote your work. You can also create a range of sub-boards depending on your subject, e.g. if you’re publishing your photography, you could have a board for autumn, spring, summer and winter to make it easier for people to navigate your published work.

Youtube: a creative showcase

No matter the subject YouTube is a great way to show off your work in a creative way. Most employers want you to have a creative side so this is a great way to show off what you can do when using your imagination, whether it is via a vlog or creating your own slideshow etc. People can leave comments, give it a ‘thumbs up’, share, and you can monitor how well its doing via how many views you are getting which is clearly stated above the comments. Facebook: The world’s Yellow Pages

Facebook the most popular social networking site in the world, so why not turn this into a portfolio opportunity to get yourself and your work noticed? You can create a group or page dedicated to your work, where you can post your best pieces, get comments, likes, shares and create discussions. Many employers will use the search bar on Facebook to find people suitable for their job opening as they know it’s like a Yellow Pages for finding people online. Include keywords in your page name so that the recruiters can easily find you.
